How Does Bitcoin Video Poker Work?

Bitcoin video poker is exactly the same as regular video poker, except you’ll be wagering bitcoin instead of regular money. However, many online casinos can convert your bitcoin to regular currency, so you can still play with USD if you prefer.  Since most people have an Android or Apple iOS device in their pockets, casino apps have become extremely popular and allow users to play while on the move.

Why Play Video Poker?

Let’s face it: poker is a hard game to get good at. Most people who are beating it, online or off, have dedicated countless hours to studying the game. Video poker has all the appeal of regular poker, but requires only a fraction of the time to learn. While you may not be able to beat video poker, it doesn’t come with all the frustrations of regular poker. You’re less likely to be put on tilt or spend time agonising over a misplayed hand and you won’t have to deal with annoying players.

Rules

Video poker is essentially a single-player version of Five Card Draw. At the start of each round, the player places a bet, presses the “deal” button, and is dealt five cards. They are then given the option of discarding one or more cards and drawing replacement cards, or standing pat on their current hand. If their hand is a winner, the player will receive a payout based on the size of the initial bet. There are many different variants of video poker; by far the most common, however, are “Jacks or Better” and “Deuces Wild”.

Jacks or Better

Jacks or Better, also known as Draw Poker, is currently the most popular form of video poker. You’ll get paid if you make a hand better than a pair of jacks. Here’s a list of all the winning hands, and the amount they pay out relative to the initial bet, in ascending order:

                  Pair, jacks or better:               1
                  Two pair:                                    2
                  Three-of-a-kind:                      3
                  Straight:                                     4
                  Flush:                                          6
                  Full house:                                 9
                  Four-of-a-kind:                        25
                  Straight flush:                           50
                  Royal flush:                               800

There are many subvariants of Jacks or Better which have slightly adjusted pay tables; often, they’ll give you a bonus for making a certain hand.

Deuces Wild

In Deuces Wild, all twos are wild. This means that they will play as whichever card gives the player the highest hand, which makes them the most valuable card in the deck. Because deuces play wild, the pay table differs significantly from Jacks or Better:

                  Three-of-a-kind:                      1
                  Straight:                                     2
                  Flush:                                          2
                  Full house:                                 3
                  Four-of-a-kind:                        5
                  Straight flush:                           9
                  Five-of-a-kind:                         15
                  Wild royal flush:                      25
                  Four deuces:                             200
                  Natural royal flush:                 800

Strategy

While you may not be able to beat video poker in the long run, you can apply sound poker strategy to get the most out of your cryptocurrency. Video poker strategy is similar to Five Card Draw strategy, minus the betting aspects. You can find video poker charts online that tell you what to discard based on what you’ve been dealt. However, if you don’t like the idea of memorising charts, here are a few general rules of thumb to follow when playing Jacks or Better:

  • If you have 3 to a royal flush, don’t chase it if you already have winning hand.
  • If you have 4 to a straight flush and any pair, you should chase the straight flush.
  • If you have 4 to a flush, don’t chase it if you already have a winning hand.
  • If you have 4 to a straight and a low pair, you should keep the low pair.
  • Having two unpaired high cards is better than having 3 to a straight flush
  • The only time you shouldn’t stand pat on three-of-a-kind or higher is if you have 4 to a royal flush.

Strategy for Deuces Wild uses the same concepts as for Jacks or Better, so if you pick one up, it’s easy to transition to the other. If you play video poker optimally, it’s possible to virtually eliminate the house edge. Even if played sub-optimally, however, video poker still offers higher returns than most slots. That means you’re able to have a whole lot of fun for practically no cost at all!
