Rules
Playing Seven Card Stud with bitcoin is exactly the same as with any other currency. At the start of each hand, each player is dealt two face-down cards and one face-up card. The player with the lowest ranking face-up card posts the “bring-in”, which is similar to a big blind. Betting then starts clockwise from the bring-in. After the first round of betting, another card is dealt face-up to each player, followed by another round of betting. This carries on with a third and fourth face-up card, and ends with a final dace-down card. The easiest way to remember all this is “two down, four up, one down”. After the final round of betting, players may go to showdown, and the pot is awarded to the best five card hand.
Strategy
Seven Card Stud may seem like a simple form of poker, but it’s deceptively hard to master. Similar to NLHE, strong paired hands play better in heads-up pots, whereas drawing hands play better in multiway pots. However, middle and lower pairs are weaker in Seven Card Stud than in NLHE, as it’s very likely that one of your opponents will have it beat. If there are still a few cards to be dealt, having an unpaired high card in your hands adds value to it, as it may become paired later. It’s important to be able to identify which hands you should carry on with and which hands you should throw away. Hands that cannot be considered “made hands” at the moment, but have a good chance of improving later on, are strong starting hands in Seven Card Stud. For example, if you are dealt three suited cards or connected cards, this will generally be a hand you will want to continue with. Its often correct to chase these kinds of draws, as if they hit, you are likely to get paid off.
Seven Card Stud takes a fair bit of time to master, but once you get a feel for when to continue with a hand and when to throw it away, it won’t be long before you start making bitcoin. Bitcoin poker players tend to be a bit weaker than their conventional currency counterparts, so using bitcoin is a great way to start learning Seven Card Stud.
